A wheeled walker (also called a rollator) is a walking aid that helps a person with limited mobility, or a senior, get around and stay standing. Compared with a walking frame (no wheels), a walker is easier to maneuver because it takes less strength to slide or turn. It should be reserved for users who do not have severe balance problems. To help you move safely, a wheeled walker has brakes that work two ways: squeeze the handle and the brake engages. Push the handles down and the brake locks on without you holding pressure (parking brake). Wheeled walkers usually include a seat, a backrest, and a carrying bag.
What are the benefits of a wheeled walker?
- Wheeled walkers are built for longer use, especially outdoors. Getting around is easier with a wheeled walker, especially models with a seat so you can stop as soon as you feel tired.
- 3-wheel walkers are a good choice both indoors and outdoors. They are more maneuverable and narrower than 4-wheel walkers.
- People who need a walking aid to go shopping often prefer a wheeled walker.
