Electric scooter for limited mobility: get your freedom and independence back

The electric scooter for limited mobility is much more than adaptive equipment: it is a real vehicle built to give you your independence back. Whether you want a scooter for a senior to make everyday trips safer, or a vehicle adapted to a disability, Tous Ergo has a carefully chosen selection.

If fatigue sets in too quickly or walking has become difficult, a mobility scooter is a strong alternative to a walker or a wheelchair. Do your shopping at the mall, ride through town, or enjoy the outdoors safely, without depending on someone else.

How do you choose a scooter for a disability or for a senior?

To find the electric runabout or mobility scooter that matches your life, a few points decide it:

1. 3-wheel or 4-wheel scooter: which one?

  • 3-wheel electric scooter: This is the maneuverability champion. A very tight turning radius makes it ideal for weaving down supermarket aisles, moving indoors, or riding on smooth surfaces.
  • 4-wheel electric scooter: It offers rock-solid stability. Choose it for outdoor trips, uneven ground, country paths, or small obstacles.

2. Folding, transport, and travel

Do you often travel by car or train? Choose a folding electric scooter or one that comes apart (sometimes automatically, with a remote). These lighter travel models slip into a car trunk, a good fit for very active people with limited mobility.

3. Range, battery, and speed

Whether you are going around the block or on a long ride, range matters. Travel models offer about 15 kilometers, while road scooters can go beyond 50 km.

Today, many models use lithium-ion batteries: they are lighter, recharge faster, and need less care than lead-acid batteries.

On speed, most models travel between 6 and 12 km/h, which keeps you safer.

4. Comfort and ergonomics

A good medical scooter should be comfortable. Look for a padded, swivel captain's chair, flip-up armrests (for an easier transfer from a bed or chair), and an adjustable tiller that fits your build. Add a pressure-relief cushion if you plan long outings.

Rules, approval, and safety

Do you need a license or insurance?
No license is required to drive a mobility scooter. However, specific liability insurance is required for motor vehicles, even for scooters that travel under 6 km/h. Ask your insurer to add it to your policy.

On the rules:

  • Scooters under 6 km/h are treated like pedestrians and should stay on the sidewalk.
  • Some faster models (up to 15 km/h) have road approval (turn signals, mirrors, lights) and may use public roads.

Price, French Social Security reimbursement, and the MDPH

What does a scooter for someone with limited mobility cost? The investment runs from €900 for an entry-level model to more than €4000 for an all-terrain or road-approved model.

Please note: Unlike some power wheelchairs, limited-mobility scooters do not have an LPPR code, so French Social Security does not reimburse them directly. With a doctor's prescription, we can give you a quote right away and the paperwork to apply for PCH funding through your MDPH.
