Buying guide: how to choose your medical lift chair

Choosing a comfort chair or a lift chair is a decisive step in helping a senior age in place safely. With a motorized mechanism and a simple remote, the chair gently guides the hips from sitting to standing. That motion greatly reduces strain on the hips and knees, which limits muscle fatigue and the risk of a fall.

1 to 5 motors: which drive system fits your power recliner?

The number of motors sets how precisely you can position yourself, and whether the backrest reclines independently of the footrest. Here is how to choose:

Drive systemFeatures & positioningTous Ergo reference models (catalog price)
1 motor Synchronized motion: the back reclines as the leg rest rises. Dahlia (from 349 €) or Cocoon 1 motor.
2 motors Fully independent: raise your legs while keeping your back upright. Alphonse (from 629 €) or Lux.
3 motors Full seat tilt to reach a Zero Gravity position (legs aligned with the heart). Céleste (from 899 €) or Fitform Vario.
4 and 5 motors Independent power adjustment of lumbar support and the headrest. Valérie small size (from 990 €), Lazare (4 motors, from 999 €) or Hercule XXL (5 motors, from 1 699 €).
Manual Mechanical tilt assisted by body weight, with no plug-in power. Suzanne (from 490 €).

Size, upholstery, and ergonomics: a seat shaped to you

For a chair to feel fully secure, your feet should rest flat on the floor when you sit all the way back in the seat. The material you choose also matters for everyday comfort:

  • Specific body types: If you are under 1m60, choose our "Petite taille" (small) models (such as the Valérie). On the other end, our bariatric range (Hercule XL/XXL, Salamanca) starts at a 180 kg capacity and supports up to 300 kg, with seats up to 75 cm wide.
  • Leather, fabric, or microfiber: Faux leather (polyurethane) is very easy to clean, which is ideal if incontinence is a concern. Microfiber fabric or velvet feels warm to the touch. For the best pressure-sore prevention, choose a seat in high-density foam or memory foam (viscoelastic).
  • Wall-close function (Wall-Saver): Ideal for small rooms, this option slides the seat forward as you recline. The power chair then needs only 10 cm of space behind the back, compared with 50 cm for a standard model.

How to care for your lift chair day to day

A power recliner in microfiber or faux leather wipes clean with a damp cloth and a mild soap. If leaks are frequent, choose our Cocoon models, whose zip-off covers are fully removable and machine washable at 30°C. On the mechanical side, the actuators in our medical power chairs are lubricated for life and need no maintenance. If the power goes out, most of our chairs include a transformer with a compartment for backup batteries (9V type) so you can return the seat upright.

Does French Social Security reimburse an electric lift chair?

This is a very common question. An electric lift chair is not reimbursed by French Social Security because it does not have a dedicated LPPR code (unlike a molded shell chair). To buy your electric reclining chair, funding help is available:

  • APA (Allocation Personnalisée d'Autonomie, France's personalized autonomy allowance): If this equipment is written into your care plan, partial coverage may be available through the Departmental Council.
  • PCH (Prestation de Compensation du Handicap, France's disability compensation benefit): Home adaptations may be co-funded by the MDPH.
