Why choose a multi-leg cane instead of a standard cane?

A tripod walking cane (3 legs) or quad cane (4 legs) is meant for people who need to shift a lot of weight onto the cane, or who have serious balance problems (hemiplegia, after a stroke, muscle weakness).

Its main advantage is the size of the base. A standard cane has one point of contact. A multi-leg cane plants you more firmly on the floor. It brings immediate confidence, both mental and physical. It also stands upright when you let go, so your hands are free (to pay at the register or open a door) without hunting for somewhere to lean it.

Tripod cane or quad cane: which one?

Choosing 3 or 4 legs comes down to how much stability you need versus how easily you can lift the cane:

  • The tripod cane (3 legs): It is usually a bit lighter and takes up less floor space. A strong compromise for mixed indoor and outdoor use.
  • The quad cane (4 legs): This is the most stable model. It is often recommended for intensive rehab, or when leg strength is very limited. The base is wider, so take care on stairs (a narrow base is the better choice for that).

Technical points that help you choose well

For comfort and safety, our occupational therapists suggest you check the following:

  • The base (wide or narrow): A wide base is exceptionally stable, but it can get in the way. A narrow base is easier to handle and makes steps easier to manage.
  • The handle: Choose an ergonomic or anatomic handle if your hands hurt (arthritis). A "swan neck" shape places your body weight directly over the shaft.
  • Cane weight: Most are aluminum, so they stay light, but weight changes with the base. Make sure your wrist is strong enough to lift the cane with every step.

Reimbursement and coverage

Most tripod and quad canes have an LPPR code and may be covered by French Social Security (with a doctor's prescription). Check each product's spec sheet for the exact reimbursement amount.
