Why get a seat cushion?

At a desk, in the car, or at home, sitting in one position gets uncomfortable fast. Stay still long enough and you can go numb, overheat, or feel pain at the tailbone. Seat cushions ease those problems through their shapes, the fillings inside, and the jobs they are built to do.

What kinds of ergonomic seat cushions are there?

There are several kinds of ergonomic seat cushions. Each one has a different goal and works in a different setting:

• Triangular seat cushion: It adds comfort and helps you sit taller. The shape makes it easier to straighten up and avoid back pain.
• Coccyx cushion: It usually has a cutout at the back of the seat so there is no pressure on the tailbone.
• Pressure relief cushion: This cushion may sometimes be reimbursed. These cushions help prevent and heal pressure sores at stage I, II, or III, and they also come in more specific shapes.
• Donut cushion: It usually takes pressure off the tailbone, and it can help with hemorrhoids by keeping contact off those sensitive spots.
• Heated cushion and cooling: These options ease muscle pain, or simply add comfort in summer and winter.

How are seat cushions made?

Beyond the range of shapes, several materials are used to fill an ergonomic seat cushion:

• Beads: Usually used in the car or at home for extra comfort, and they stay fairly soft.
• Foam: This group includes several foams: viscoelastic or memory foam, high-density, and high-resilience. Memory foam is generally used in pressure relief cushions, while the others go into more traditional cushions.
• Peat and seeds: Peat and seeds are used in heated and cooling cushions. They hold their temperature for a long time and work well after a turn in the microwave or the refrigerator.
• Air: There are several kinds of air cushions. Some are used against pressure sores because they can limit pressure points, or as a firmer wedge.
