How do you make a bathtub safer with a grab bar?
A bathtub combines two major fall risks for a senior or someone with limited mobility: a slippery surface, and the effort it takes to step over the rim and then stand back up. The right support bar is the first step toward bathing on your own, safely.
Which bathtub grab bar should you choose?
There are two main types of bathtub support bars, and they solve different problems:
1. The tub handle (clamps onto the rim)
This is the simplest option, and it is often no-drill. This tub handle clamps on (with a secure vise-style mount) directly to the bathtub rim. It is ideal as a steady handhold for stepping over the side. It reassures you and helps you keep your balance, but it is not built to hold a person's full weight while they pull themselves up.
2. The wall-mounted grab bar (screws in)
For full support, a wall-mounted grab bar is essential. It is anchored firmly in the wall and resists being pulled out. For bathtub use, people usually choose:
- Straight or vertical: Installed at the tub entry, it works as a support bar for stepping over.
- Angled or corner: Installed on the side wall, it is ideal for standing up. The slanted section helps you pull from sitting to standing.
Where, and how high, should you install a bathtub grab bar?
Placement matters:
- For getting in and out (stepping over): A short vertical bar should go on the wall, on the side where you enter the tub.
- For standing up: A horizontal or angled bar should be mounted on the side wall, about 20 cm above the rim of the tub, so you can reach it from a seated position.
For full safety, also pair your grab bar with a bath seat or a bath board, which cut down the effort.
